The University of Edinburgh/NSPCC Centre for UK-wide Learning in Child Protection

Background Information

The University of Edinburgh/NSPCC Centre for UK-wide Learning in Child Protection (CLiCP) is a new research centre based within the School of Education at The University of Edinburgh.  It was set up in November 2006 in a unique collaboration between the NSPCC and the University.  It conducts research and provides analysis and commentary on child protection policy across the UK.

Vision and Mission

CLiCP aims to contribute knowledge to ensure child protection systems throughout the UK are able to respond effectively and flexibly to children in need of protection wherever they live.

What We Do

Building incrementally to an overview of child protection policy across the UK, by:

  • Conducting comparative analysis and critically assessing developments in child protection policy.
  • Conducting primary research to address gaps in existing child protection knowledge.
  • Monitoring and analysing the content and direction of UK child protection systems.
  • Disseminating findings and contribute knowledge to inform the policy making process throughout the UK.
Why We Do It

There have been many changes in child protection systems across the UK in recent years.  In addition, devolution has created new possibilities for policy in this area to diverge.

Until now, the extent to which this has actually happened is relatively unknown, as there has been little systematic examination of developments at a UK level.  CLiCP has been set up to address this, and to contribute to ensuring that children in need of protection receive high quality services wherever they live in the UK.
