Immediately before joining the Centre she worked for five years as a freelance social researcher specialising in homelessness and the housing needs of vulnerable groups. She completed work for a variety of clients in the public and voluntary sectors.

From 1997 to 2001, Kate was Principal Research Officer with the London Research Centre (later the Greater London Authority) where she specialised in special housing needs and led on projects for the Department of the Environment Transport and the Regions, Crisis and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Kate has also worked as Policy Officer for the Aids and Housing Project and Scottish Homes.
