Work experience

Louise joins the Centre after completing her PhD in Social Policy at the University of Edinburgh. Her doctoral research, Revealing lives: a qualitative study with children and young people affected by parental alcohol problems, was co-funded by ESRC and Barnardo’s (awaiting viva examination). Louise has a keen interest in research, policy and practice concerned with children and young people’s experiences of parental alcohol and drug use and their use of support services.   A particular interest she has developed is the critical exploration of research methods with children and young people on sensitive topics. Louise has also been involved in various research studies with ChildLine, Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) and the European Network of Children Affected by Risky Environments (ENCARE).

Prior to commencing her PhD, Louise worked as a researcher for Barnardo’s on a range of research projects exploring children’s rights, families seeking asylum, service needs of drug using families and research with highly introverted children. Previously, Louise enjoyed her work as a Children’s Rights Officer for children and young people who were ‘looked after and accommodated’ by Local Authorities.
