Research:Preventing Child Deaths: Learning from Review

Status

Ongoing

Summary

Sharon Vincent has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship to undertake this study. The research will seek to answer the following questions:

  • What data is collected on child deaths in the UK, Australia and North America?
  • What does the data tell us in terms of the main risk factors?
  • How are child deaths reviewed?
  • Are the different approaches to child death review in these countries congruent with a public health approach?
  • Has review been effective in reducing child deaths, and if so how have reductions been achieved?

The research will adopt a case study approach. Fieldwork will be undertaken in 10 case study sites spanning 3 continents: New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, New Zealand, California, Washington, Michigan, British Columbia, England and Wales. The case studies will comprise documentary analysis and interviews with key informants.

Milestones

The study will be undertaken over 18 months from 1st September 2010 to the 28th February 2012.

Outputs will include a report for the funder, journal articles, a book and presentations at seminars and conferences
